Calming Kedgeree

Kedgeree is a delicious dish and earns trillions of points on the health chart.  So lets list them: You’ve got the Omega 3 found in the the fish which boosts levels of that feel-good brain chemical serotonin that I’ve mentioned in previous posts. Then there’s the protein, found in the fish and eggs, helping repair and build muscles and so supporting us in being stronger and more active beings. Then lastly you have the undercover mood soother that is Basmati rice; in India considered the foundation of all nourishment. The carbohydrates found in rice provide us with energy but unlike other high carbohydrate foods, Basmati rice is a lot easier to digest and therefore considered a superior choice. Within Auryveda (the ancient natural healing system of India), Basmati rice is seen as pure and balanced as it’s high in prana (energy), cooling on the virya (digestion), and comforting for the vipaka (post digestion effect) due to its sweet undertones. Overall this combination is believed to leave you feeling soothed and calm.

Traditionally this is a breakfast dish, and given its wealth of benefits I think it’s the perfect way to start your day. But saying this, after a hard day when my muscles are feeling tired and my brain is wired, tucking into a big bowl of this feels like the perfect cure.
