Raw Chai Brownies

If your anything like me then you’ll love a good dose of chocolate, (I mean who doesn’t)? But finding a way to consume it in the healthy conscious manner is nearing impossible, or so I thought. However one fine day (I say fine because cooking and eating were involved) whilst playing around in the kitchen, I stumbled on a combination which really did tick all boxes, Chai spices with Cocoa, dates, coconut and pecans. Seriously a winning combo. And whats more it’s completely vegan and gluten free!

With every recipe I create I always ensure I’m using ingredients that are VYM approved, i.e. good for your beautiful little minds, and this delicious delight is no exception. Other than the dates, coconut and pecans which are all winners in their own rights of course, the VYM spotlight this week is on the wonderful spice concoction that is Chai spice.

Chai (or Masala Chai to be completely correct) originates from India and is a combination of spices, black tea, hot milk and a dash of sugar to sweeten things up. It has a wonderful way of leaving you calm, soothed and cleansed. In fact the ancient traditional healing system of India, Ayurveda, initially only used it for medicinal purposes due to the many benefits the mixture of spices has on both our minds and bodies.

In this recipe you are just using the chai spices, but don’t worry that’s the best bit. So lets talk about those powerful spices and why we love them so much. Although the ingredients of chai spice can occasionally vary, the main players are always the same:

  • Ginger : Provides a little kick of energy and fires up our inner systems
  • Cloves: Re-energises and stimulates our minds
  • Cinnamon: Warms the body and calms the nervous system
  • Cardamon: Clears the mind and boosts the mood
  • Black pepper: Detoxes the system and improves metabolism

So, as you can well imagine, together these spices do wonders for our minds (and bodies), making these brownies probably the most calming, mood loving brownies you will ever eat.
